Afenifere Leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti Dies at 100

Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has died at the age of 100.

His death was announced on Tuesday by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who described the late elder statesman as a symbol of wisdom, integrity and selfless service.

Fasoranti reportedly died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The governor, in a condolence statement, said the late Afenifere leader dedicated his life to the development of Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.

He added that Fasoranti’s counsel, fatherly guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be greatly missed.

President Bola Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo were among prominent Nigerians who mourned the centenarian, paying tribute to his contributions to Nigeria’s political development and democratic struggle.

Tinubu described Fasoranti as an elder statesman whose life exemplified integrity, discipline, selflessness and commitment to the Yoruba people and national unity.

The President also recalled visiting Fasoranti in Akure in 2022 to inform him of his intention to contest the presidency. According to Tinubu, the late Afenifere leader predicted that he would become President during his lifetime.

Fasoranti was a prominent disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and a longstanding advocate of true federalism, social justice and democratic governance.

An educationist by profession, he established several educational institutions, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Igoba, Akure.

He also served as Ondo State Commissioner for Finance between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

Fasoranti participated in the struggle for Nigeria’s democracy, including activities associated with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which opposed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

His leadership of Afenifere placed him among the prominent figures in Yoruba socio-political affairs, particularly in debates over restructuring, federalism, justice and good governance.

Afenifere described his death as a significant loss, praising his contributions to the organisation and his longstanding commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people and Nigeria.

The organisation said details of his burial arrangements would be announced later.
